Madison Moo Manager Resigns

The Madison Moo, a summer collegiate team, is looking for a new coach this off season.  Previous manager, Joel Schneider, has resigned to concentrate on going back to school and his spring coaching duties at Madison East.

"This is one of the toughest decisions that I have ever had to make," said Schneider, "but with going back to school and my duties expanding over at East, I had to make a choice.  I truly loved all the guys from the past three summers."

The Moo, with its collection of Madison Area college baseball players, started playing three years ago.  The Moo finished that first season with a 3-18 record, but the foundation was laid.  In 2004, players such as Shawn Burcum and Andrew Handorf (both from DeForest and Edgewood College) propelled the Moo to a 7-16 record, a program record for wins in a season.  Then in 2005, thanks in part to several new faces, the Moo finished with a even .500 mark, and set several team records.  The Moo has also saw its first alumnus turn pro last summer when 2004 Moo player David Reifenberger (UW-Platteville) signed with the Cleveland Indians.

"I know what we started here was a good thing," added Schneider, "it's such a great opportunity for a player who is serious about playing baseball.  Nothing against some of the other leagues in the area, but we face the toughest competition around.  From Appleton, to Racine, to Sheboygan, you will not find a tougher competition unless you are playing in the Northwoods League."

The Moo should be even tougher next year.  Ten of the sixteen players on the roster are eligible to return.  Those players would be Tyler Yapp, Blake Guyer, Ryan Siebert, Dan Birr, Josh Frenkel, Bill Held, Jeff Schultz, Travis Kerr, Garrett Granitz, and Travis Kerr.  Yapp has been a 2 time MVP for the Moo, while Guyer and Held each have earned pitcher of year awards.

"Whoever gets this team next year will have a great core to work with," said Schneider, "we should return 2 solid starting pitchers and several quality hitters.  I can't wait to see how they play in 2006!"

Schneider is going back to school at Edgewood College, finishing up a degree in special education and is the JV baseball coach at Madison East.  He will continue to stay on with the Moo serving as a consultant.

The Moo thank you for your support this season.  See the 2005 recap below.
